Young British Boys, Aged 10,11, Charged With Attempted Murder

British police have charged two brothers, aged 10 and 11, with attempting to murder two other children who were found dazed and bloodied after a violent attack.

One victim, an 11-year-old boy, is in intensive care with serious head injuries. The other victim, a 9-year-old boy, needed surgery for an arm injury. The victims say they were robbed and beaten by the other boys near Doncaster in northern England. Prosecutors say that each child is facing charges of attempted murder and robbery. The attack was shocking because of the young ages of the alleged “attempted murderers” and the severity of the injuries to their victims. These boys are among the youngest people ever charged with such serious crimes in Britain.

I remember being ten years old and never once did I even think about committing robbery or murder, even less really know the true meaning of them. Yeah, kids see murders on television and movies, but who would think a ten-year-old could really voluntarily commit an act against someone that could potentially kill someone? The thought of this crime is crazy to believe. However, children everywhere are being exposed to these crimes at a younger and younger age. We went from the Columbine shootings in 2001 to now robbery and attempted murder by ten-year-olds in 2009. Only eight years it took to reach almost a whole decade younger generation. I believe that the media was a big influence on these children’s acts. How many times have you seen a child under the age of 12 in a rated R movie with their parents? Something really needs to be done to censor kids from things they should not be seeing.

kids are becoming more violent beacause of the way things are in schools. I intern at an elementary school and the kids are brutal to one another. I feel like kids are growing up to fast and being constantly ridiculed by everyone! I think that we see these kids and think that they need help and figure out what we can do to change the attitudes of kids and make them see more options. Not shooting!!

I don't think that there is a simple answer to why children are seemingly becoming more violent. We can point the fingers all we want, but I think the issue goes beyond violence in the media or permissive school systems. I would suggest that the heart of the matter lies in the heart of humanity, and is exacerbated by certain characteristics of our social infrastructure.

I agree, I don't think the right answer is out there, and its just a matter of finding it. While there are certain images that may not be appropriate for children to see, I don't believe in mass censorship. I feel that the responsibility is in the community - the parents, teachers, churches, and other community organizations to decide what is appropriate viewing material for children. A bit more supervision also wouldn't hurt.

It's surprising to me that the source of this violence is the media. I'm a big fan of just pointless action movies and i couldnt tell you why because most of them are terrible really. (i like good movies too) But anywho i never once as a kid would act upon these images and things and maybe because i was able to see that these things weren't the way to live actual life.. I dont know if i lost you there but media does seem to be the greatest suspect, besides a reinforcement of "good and evil" basics from parents. (???)
