The United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates thinks that the U.S. should remain in Afghanistan instead of pulling out in favor of unmanned drones and special operations forces as suggested by a columnist earlier this week. A recent poll shows that fifty-seven percent of Americans oppose the war; rising eleven percent since April. America knows that it has limited time to flip this opposition and show the American people that success is a possibility. Defense Secretary Gates believes that we now have “the resources and the right approach to begin making some headway and turning around a situation that...has been deteriorating.”
I agree with Gates to a certain extent, but only because we have invested too much in Afghanistan to abandon ship now. We need to continue through the turning point and hopefully come out with some type of success. Pulling out now while resistance is still strong will look as if we are giving up. However, Gates realizes that the Afghan people and Americans alike are growing increasingly opposed to our occupation of Afghanistan. Also, with America's economic crisis on this administration's back, pulling out and trying to save face looks like a viable option. I feel that if a true turning point in the war is in sight a new and drastically different plan would be counterproductive to America's cause, which is to bring stability to Iraq without the influence of terrorism. Overall I feel like, while it would be nice for us to get out of the war in Afghanistan, it is not feasible for us to leave right now.
