Times Reporter Is Freed in Afghan Raid That Kills Aide
This article is about a NY Times reporter, Stephen Farrell, who was held captive in Afghanistan. Farrell was freed in a military commando raid this week but his Afghan interpreter was killed during the rescue. A British commando was also killed in the rescue attempts. Farrell and his interpreter, Sultan Munadi, were taken while reporting on the aftermath of NATO airstrikes that exploded two fuel tankers that had been hijacked by Taliban militants. Over 90 people, including civilians were killed in this attack. Farrell and Munadi knew it was a raid when the attack began and decided to run out where they had to dodge bullets. Afghan interpreter, Munadi, was not so fortunate and was killed.
This sorry is so sad to me. To read that Munadi was a father and had hopes of one day becoming a public educator to ease the problem of illiteracy in Afghanistan breaks my heart. This man was only back briefly to do some translating and neither he nor his family ever thought this is how it would end. It is also very bad luck. I also think about the reporter Stephen Farrell. Part of me thinks he is courageous to put himself in the “danger zone” for to report and try to get the true stories of what is happening overseas. The other part of me thinks he is really dumb to get involved in such a risky adventure.
