Summary
In Indonesia, foreign medical teams have reached farther into the country. They are treating victims from the massive earthquake which hit on September 30. They are also dealing with crowds wanting help for other illnesses. Even before the quake, there was no functioning health in West Sumatra as well as most of Indonesia. Since the quake an influx of international aid has prompted all sorts of people to seek help. The capital of Padang and villages in nearby mountains were flattened or buried by landslides due to the quake. Seven hundred and four people were the official death toll but many fear that it could reach into the thousands. There are about twenty countries that are sending aid workers to West Sumatra. Most of the aid workers are from the U.S. military. In the past four days they have treated nearly four hundred people and there were about one hundred people which were lined up outside tents waiting for treatment. Health care is the main focus now due to all the injured survivors which many of them were homeless. They are expecting the arrival of two U.S. Navy ships and a Usaid flight with fifty tons of relief. This was the worst natural disaster in Indonesia since a temblor in the central Javanese city of Yogyakarta.
Reaction
I feel bad for the people of West Sumatra in Indonesia. The earthquake did massive damage to their villages and homes. I cannot imagine what they must be going through since they have no functioning health system. I am glad to hear that people from other countries are coming to the aid of the injured people. It also makes me happy that most of the people coming to help the people of Indonesia are from the U.S military. I am also pleased to see that they have made health care the main focus. I hope that the aid workers will be able to help and treat all of the people.
