In a Guinea Seized by Violence, Women as Prey

Joy Weems 10/06/09, 7:50am

After watching the film "rape in the Congo" this further reiterates the violence against women that is occurring on a large scale. Guinean soldiers suppressed a political demonstration at a stadium last week. The description of what happened by witnesses are horrific. Many women were raped, beat, and many people were killed. It is unfortunate that many women are still being abused with little that seems to be being done for their protection. This time as with many times there seemed to have been no shame evoked on the soldiers. The raping occurred in broad daylight in front of many helpless witnesses. Many people feel that military leader Capt Moussa Dadis camara needs to be forced to leave. There is no protection for women to be sheltered from the massive attacks in this country. Because of the shame surrounded by sexual violence the exact numbers are unknown of the number of victims from that days event. Rape seems to be a very common tool of oppression in Africa but large scale violence against women has not been a previous tactic used by the military says a witness of the crime. Women are the new battlefield targets. A force of intervention is needed to protect these women from the Guinean Army.
Again I am outraged by the continuous acts of violence occurring against women in this country in particular. It seems that little is being done to protect these women. This is a major issue and if this government does not force protection of these women then the countries future is unknown. Women are major contributors to each and every society and if violence is continually evoked upon them then the country has a lot of future issues to address. Does war cause people to turn rage on innocent individuals or was it always in that person to begin with????
