Summary:
Last week disaster struck in the Philippines when typhoon Parma hit. This natural disaster only exacerbated the damaged due to the flooding from storm Katsana. Up to 36 inches of rain fell and had winds up to 92 MPH. The water that is rancid, stagnant, and infested has now been standing for 10 days and worry about water born disease is highly prevalent. This coupled with the garbage that is clogging the city's aged drainage and sewage systems makes for deplorable conditions. Most children have gotten ill and have had diarrhea as a result. Unfortunately the government isn’t expecting the water to recede until Christmas. People living in these areas are very poor and don’t have much of anything since the flood and they have nowhere else to go. The government is rationing out supplied through private relief trucks. They are given two packages of noodles, a bottle of drinking water, a canned good, rice and coffee while they wait for the area to be cleaned.
Reactions:
Honestly I can’t imagine living in such conditions. I personally have never even experienced a flood therefore I have no true understanding of a typhoon. I want to tell those people to leave the area so they won’t be at risk for illness but that’s not possible. They don’t have the money to simply relocate until things get better. I think it’s up to the community and their government to make a coordinated cleanup effort to restore the Philippines to its rightful way.
