In Iraq, battling an internal bane

In Baghdad it seems there is internal corruption going on. Many security officials seem to be under the gun for possible links in a robbery of a jewelery store. There are 663, 000 security forces. Corruption within the forces is not new but has increased more. Brig. Gen Hussein Kamal says "there's a need to reorganize and cleanse the security forces and armed forces from extreme criminals". Much more time, in years he says is needed to reach the potential they aspire for. 60, 000 plus people were dismissed because of being corrupt as security forces. And 15,000 were expelled last year. That let's people know that there are many more corrupt officers that are being exposed slowly but surely. Security officers have been known to be involved in crimes from petty robbery to kidnapping and killings. Something needs to be done, and has begun to happen to get rid of these corrupt officials in charge. Some feel that the problem could worsen as the country begins its elections starting in January. Eight people were killed in the robbery of the Jewelery store and many do not understand how they were able to get past so called security check points. Two units have been instructed to solely target corruption and they have their hands full.
It seems that there are many corrupt officials who are in positions to take advantage of the systems set in place. It is unfortunate that people are put in place to protect and serve but use the opportunity for personal gain. Unfortunately this country does not conduct extensive backgrounds on these individuals they put in place. Like one official said, "we didn't look at backgrounds, we were just looking for anyone who could use a gun" With those type of standards it is obvious why they have so many corrupt security officials in control.
