The UN just released a report stating that one billion people in the world today are undernourished. That is almost one in six of the world’s population who are struggling with hunger. Nearly all of these people live in developing countries. Still, there are 642 million people in Asia and the Pacific struggling with chronic hunger, 265 million in sub-Saharan Africa and 95 million in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Near East and North Africa while the remaining 16 million are living in developed countries. This alarming number of undernourished people is due to the global economic crisis. Due to financial losses, governments have been pouring their money into finical markets in hopes of stabilization, which then leads to smaller investments in agriculture and food distribution. The UN report calls for a greater investment by asking farmers to become more productive and flexible during these hard times.
While other people sit around and complain about how this economic crisis is hurting them and hitting them hard, I think people need to appreciate that they still have a dinner every night. Even if they do not, I believe it is very difficult to go hungry in the United States. There are so many options, opportunities and help for the homeless and hungry in this country. However, countries in Africa do not have the kind of opportunities and aid that we have here at home. Before the number of people undernourished in the world was excessively large but not it has exceeded one billion. That is way too many people and I believe we really need to step in along with the government.

I can't believe one million people are undernourshied. One in six that is sooooooo many people. I wish there was a stable way everyone could come together and fix that problem. I think about how much food and water me and my roommates waste and it is terrible to think what those people would give to have even a scrap of it.
Wow, I knew that hunger is a major problem, but I don't think I realized it was that many people that are malnourished. I really wish that it was a simple problem to fix, but unfortunately a solution probably won't appear for a long time.
That honestly leaves me shocked, so many people are left hungry. I agree with Charity, I wish there could be a easy solution to the problem, but unfortunately that is not the case.
I knew that there was a hungry problem but I didn't realize that it involved that many undernourish people. This is really sad and I hope that one day that problem will be solved.
I agree with you Melanie it is very easy to overlook the problems that we are not exposed to on a day to day basis. We are usually too concerned with how things have an effect on us or our society and many times do not think about those societies/people that go hungry for days. I also found interesting what you pointed out about the difference in what we as a developed country consider poverty in comparison to other country’s standard of living. If we look at our standard of living in relation to, for instance Africa’s we realize that complaining about not being able to buy luxuries is completely absurd and selsifh in a way.
