Why is the Amazon Being Destroyed?

"Between May 2000 and August 2005, Brazil lost more than 132,000 square kilometers of forest"(Amazon Destruction) The Amazon is a vast beautiful rain forest that daily goes under construction, removing trees and clearing the land. In other words deforestation is the best word to use that describes the Amazon these days. One of the main reasons for deforestaiton in the Amazon is due to land clearings needed my farmers, commercial interests, misguided government policies, inappropriate World Bank projects, and commercial exploitation of forest resources.(Amazon Destruction) Dove soaps is a major consumer of the forest due to a certain oil produced in some of the trees there. DUe to the deforestation the countries economic health is hurting."the decline in deforestation from 1988-1991 nicely matched the economic slowdown during the same period, while the rocketing rate of deforestation from 1993-1998 paralleled Brazil's period of rapid economic growth." (Amazon Destruction) A small percentage of landowners clear lands for for pasteurization of cows. The reason for this is because Amazon land is realitivly cheaper than government/public land, thus for the increased amount of clearings. "Such favorable taxation policies, combined with government subsidized agriculture and colonization programs, encourage the destruction of the Amazon." (Amazon Destruction)

Yet again the cheaper dollar wins out. When a cheap opportunity is presented to a person, chances are they are going to take it instead of the more expensive offer; whether or not the cheaper one is morally good or bad. THis is what is excatly happening in the Amazon, people are taking the cheaper way out to survive. Im all for being able to save a buck, but when that saved dollar starts to impede over the health of not only a community but the world something has to be done. What that is, i don't know yet. However, all this save, save, save may be helping all of our checking accounts, but its not helping the environment.

I wish I knew the answer to this issue. I don't, and I don't pretend to. We need to find a balance between our world and our bank accounts. Our world is suffering so that we can save a penny here, a dollar there. It sucks but I don't know how we are going to fix it.

its the cut-throat logging and meat companies, if they werent pressuring people to give land and offering good deals, this would not be a problem. Money is the root of all evil.

Well we all ought to tighten our belts a little and consume a little less. Which means I probably won't buy dove soap anymore, though I really want to. It's frustrating how almost every product available on our market turns out eventually to be down right bad. It's either bad for us, the environment, other humans, the economy.
