Haiti has recently released a statement that the Cholera strain may last for years. Haiti has been hit by a strain of Cholera that is particularly “virulent” and could stay in the country for years even if they take health measures. Cholera has been absent from the country for over 50 years and that means that the Haitians have little or no immunity to fight the disease. The Centers for Disease Control expect the disease to break out in the over crowded Port-au-Prince, which was the city hit by the quake. Manoj Menon, liaison for the Center for the Disease Control says that with more that 1100 Haitians now dead and more than 18,000 ill, it is hard to know how many more people will contact or die from the disease. He also adds that we will likely never know where this came from and we expect the cases will continue for a number of years.
Haiti has had a really hard time for several weeks end on end. New cases of the disease are on the rise and they feel like it is never going to end. The Centers for Disease Control are working everyday to try to help the ill people of Haiti but its a slow process and is going to take a lot of time. The outbreak of Cholera in Haiti is a social problem because its affecting more and more Haitians and the people are having to live in fear of catching the disease everyday. The problem can be fixed but it is going to take a very long time to completely get rid of the disease because it keeps spreading so rapidly. With the help of the Centers of Disease Control the spread of Cholera will hopefully slow down and eventually die out.
