U.S. - China Environmental Cooperation

Shannon DeWitt

Shouldn’t we all come together to fight pollution so we can really make a difference? Well, China and the United States are on board. They even have an official signed document that formalizes the partnership between the U.S. and China on environmental protection. This Memorandum of Understanding is a renewal of an old agreement that will mark 30 years of partnership under environmental protection for the two countries. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the two governmental agencies collaborate on the prevention and management of air and water pollution, pollution of persistent organic pollutants and toxic substances, hazardous and solid waste, and the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental law. The agreement sets a schedule to meet every two years in order to review the progress made in the past two years and approve plans for the next two years. “The United States and China have been at the forefront of environmental collaboration and are building on past successes to jointly address current and emerging environmental challenges.”

China and the United States are setting an example that should be followed by other countries all over the world. It should be noted that the U.S. and China are top contributors to the pollution in the world, especially air pollution. It seems appropriate that they should take responsibility and be leaders in the movement to fight pollution before there is no hope left. The fact that these two countries were able to see the damage being done by pollution and realized the need for change set the stage for them to join together to begin this social movement. Hopefully others will join this cause to help spread the word on this serious issue and fight for a change.

I am so glad that countries are coming together to fix the pollution problem. I hope that more people will join together to fix this problem. Air pollution is such a horrible problem, and countries need to be educated on how it can effect the whole world, not just their country. Every country need to take responsibility for their action, and the first step to that is by joining together to try not to do anymore damage than what is already done.

I still remain jaded about this. I have yet to see true follow through on these types of issues. Countries pledge to do better, then stall and do little. Time shall tell.

I can really appreciate the fact that since China and the US are the top contributors of environmental pollution, they are leading the fight against it. AND they are leading it together promoting peace and protection of the environment.
