David Kato, a gay rights activist in Uganda, was beaten to death yesterday in his home during a time of increasing violence against homosexuals. Just weeks ago, Kato, along with two others, were compensated for being exposed as homosexuals in a magazine, suggesting that they be harmed.
Though Americans are dealing with our own human rights issues, we are not proving to be helping other nations where it counts. America funds programs about AIDS in Uganda. This may seem noble, but a closer look will reveal otherwise.
Abstinence-Be Faithful focused interventions help offer help for people infected with HIV and AIDS. Though these programs serve many people, they are not effective. Moreover, they are anti-LGBT, and anti-woman, which keeps people at risk of contracting and spreading the virus.
Sippel, a Huffington Post journalist, feels that the US needs to stop funding these programs that are reinforcing discrimination and ignorance.
I agree. If I were to attempt to understand why the US would help fund these programs, when we are showing signs of knowing better within our own policies, I would conclude that it’s a method for those in charge to see manifested their real opinions.
I don’t know if I would say that they are uneducated, simply because I’m hoping this is not true. If those in charge are willing to let homosexuals serve openly in the military, and allow same-gender marriage, these efforts are seen in a different light when people learn of realities like the one at hand.
