The article that I chose is “South Sudan: Women Dreams of Independence”. I chose this article because even though it is not happening in the United States it still affects a significant number of people. I chose this article because while I was reading it I really felt bad for these women. This article is about women but it stems from a deeper issue, Southern Sudan was voting to become separate from Northern Sudan. This would benefit women the most because they are at the bottom of society while being under the Islamic ruling combined with the social norms of their culture. Almost all the women who voted were in tears because with this separation they will be able to work towards their own freedom rights, which is not possible while they are connected with Northern Sudan. The women in Southern Sudan agree that if they were to be independent from the north they can then build their own respect and equality in the south. These women in the south were in a survey that exposed that out of 250 women 36 percent of them had been ganged-raped, and others raped during abduction and then others were traded sex for food. These women have been threw a lot and this story alone shares some of the insights of inequality. I might have looked a little deeper but I found it quite ironic how the daughters are handed over as compensation for murder to another family. This fact made me think about the fact that women of all ages whether it is babies or little girls still do not have the right to choose, and their mothers cannot even protect them. I thought this article was quite interesting and it made me think about other issues besides just the issues that we face in the United States.
