Illegal immigration has been a hot topic problem in today's news. One problem is the inability undocumented immigrants have to go to college. In an effort to help pass a bill allowing the students to attend college, many illegal individuals “came out.” These students made it known that they did not have the paperwork required to go to school, but that their dream was to do so. The bill did not pass, and many aspiring students were deported. Though the USA is itself a country of illegal immigrants, there is an idea of “us” and “them”. There is an idea that these students will take up room in “our” colleges. Immigrants that have been here their entire lives, but lack necessary paperwork see themselves as Americans, but Americans that are not wanted. The president approves of the bill to allow the students to attend US colleges, but he is met with opposition from both parties. Many states have their own opinions on how to handle this issue, and act on both ends of the spectrum.

Immigration for schooling purposes is a worldwide effort. Students travel to other countries, and sometimes across the world to go to college. Many countries do not have the means to educate their people, but these people may be out of luck. With immigration laws and limited numbers of student visas in other countries, America is following suit with guarding education from outsiders. Rather than work toward a solution for the problem of immigration, the USA and other countries are saying “No, and keep out.” This is a world wide global problem because it effects academia worldwide as individuals seek education. If our world does not have opportunity for education, the negative consequences will be felt in all aspects of life.
