Blog #5 Blog # 5 Libya Protests: Anti-Government Protesters Killed During 'Day Of Rage'

2/17/2011

Libyan protestors dubbed their own “day of rage” in the fashion of other Arab countries on Thursday, in an act to remove longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi from ruling. At least twenty protestors have been killed. Security forces have arrested fourteen people. Protestors rallied in Tripoli, though marches and rallies broke out in five cites: Beyida, Beghazi, Zenttan, Rijban, and Darnah. Like other Arab countries, Libya used social networking sites to gain awareness and mobilize protestors. The government reacted with army commandos and in each city found deaths of protestors. Protestors held a funeral for the murdered and continued rallying. The government is refusing to supply the hospitals with medical supplies to aid the protestors. Gadhafi is said to have been meeting with tribal leaders to gain support for his office. As protestors mobilized, government supporters raised Libyan flags and chanted in favor of Gadhazi. Businesses remained opened and life in the capital carried on as usual. Protests have turned violent and protestors chant for a new regime and political equality, but the government is keeping a strong hold on the media. Protestors are angry over the government’s use of open fire on the marches. This recent trend of revolution is very exciting for the Middle East. Success in one country seems to bring about the sufficient force for a revolution in another. Right now, it seems like the dictators are losing their power as the people gain hope and energy but it’s not sure if every dictator will concede as they did in Egypt and Tunisia. Hopefully, not many more will have to die but if the trends follow the successful countries, the protestors might never let up and could face a lot of opposition to pro-government supporters.
