Blog #6 New Zealand Earthquake Breaks off huge glacier

Yesterday, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit one of New Zealand's biggest cities in its busiest hours. Dozens of people were killed and hundreds are still buried under the rubble waiting to be found. Many buildings had collapsed on top of themselves or on buses or other buildings and streets were severely cracked. This earthquake was the second one to hit this city in five months, and it is also New Zealand's deadliest natural disaster in 80 years.

The earthquake has also caused huge problems outside the city of Christchurch. About 30 million tons of ice broke off from New Zealand's biggest glacier due to this disaster. The glacier breaking off and falling caused waves of up to 3.5 meters high, this crashed onto Tasman Lake and kept going for about for 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, we do not have any control on natural disasters that happen like this. One thing we do know is where the fault lines are and areas that are a lot more prone to earthquakes than others. Most of the time if an earthquake is large enough, it can lead to more earthquakes somewhere else or volcanoes exploding. In this case it leads to a huge glacier breaking off. Hopefully it won’t lead to any more disasters, but for those that live in these areas where they are right on top of plate movement, if they are able to they should consider moving somewhere safer. People should also look into where they are moving, like the history and if there is a volcano nearby or if they get a lot of earthquakes before they move in.
