On February 21st, 2011, Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton spoke out against the violence towards anti-government protesters in Libya. Eye witnesses mentioned that there were air forces jets flying low over protesters, killing dozens with on board gunners, snipers from the military were posted on roof tops taking each available shot, and armed men dressed in military uniforms were opening fire into crowds of peaceful protesters. In her statement given earlier today, Hilary Clinton said that the world was watching the events occur with alarm and promised that something would be done. She also mentioned that President Barack Obama is working with allies to convey the message to the Libyan government that universal human rights of assembly and expression are being violated and it will not be tolerated.
This example of the United States stepping to force the respect of human rights is similar to the situation that had been going on for weeks in Egypt. When conditions were at their worst, the United States government stepped in to say that things needed to be changed and such a change came to Egypt. I feel that, because such a positive change came to Egypt immediately after world governments came together to stand against the issue, governments have been shown that change is possible with the will to make it happen. These two examples also show that social problems such as human rights can solved or at least maintained for the well-being of people across the world ultimately leading to worldwide equality in years to come.
