This case has been going on in Ecuador for 17 years. It is dealing with the Ecuador goverment sued Texaco to pay for pollution and damages they caused by pollultion in 1993 but Chevron bought Texaco in 2001 before the case was ever resolved and now the goverment is sueing Chevron because they own Texaco now so they are the ones that should clean up the damages done by the one they bought out. Over the 17 years this case has been going on there has been alot of sueing and counter sueing against people involved in the case who have been supsected of fraud, and just trying to get money out of Chevron. Right now Chevron has refused to pay the 9 billion which is one of the largest sums ever sued for dealing with envrionmental pollution. There is also some debate about how Texaco already payed the goverment for the damages before they were ever bought by Chevron
This is a social problem because for the past 17 years it has involved the entire goverment of Ecuador and alot of the native tribes and citizens who say the pollution has brought harm to there people; and they should get something back for all the trouble they have been though. With the oil pollution it is really harmful to the envrironment and the people who live around and in the envrionment that was polluted. If the entire case is a fraud then it would also be a problem how corrupt that goverment is when there just trying to get more money after the case has already been resolved.
