One of the biggest questions in Europe is how they are going to use the alternative energy that they have on tap through wind and solar even some tidal generators. There has already been significant in the wind and solar production of a number of EU countries, but the infrastructure to put the power they capture and create into the current power grid system is fractured at best and apparently often non-existent. The article discusses the need for the grid infrastructure to adapt and change with the new energy sources. This is something that every country that is adopting alternative energy is going to have to start considering. It certainly adds another level of complexity to the already vast and unique methods of harnessing renewable energy. I fear that particularly in the U.S. the willingness of politicians to accept and allow for the allotments of money needed to update the grid system will be rather low if not next to none. It will take a grand amount of money to update our system. For the EU, they are already in need of an update to their grid system regardless of a change in energy source so it seems like a prime opportunity to update and incorporate alternative energy into that update. To me, this is not something that will come as easily to the United States as it may be for th e EU. U.S. policy stands by the old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but should we really be waiting for the proverbial light bulb to click on when our gas prices sky rocket and stay there? Or when our outdated grid systems and power plants stop being able to offer reliable power? Or should we follow up on the progress that other countries are making and take preventative measures and save a lot of money in the long run by drastically decreasing our need for foreign oil. I would think that the latter is the obvious answer but the former seems to be the typical choice for the vast majority of politicians and corporations that could actually make change in the energy infrastructure happen. I hope that we take note that the EU seems to recognize their need for updates and are on the way to addressing them and start paying attention to our own needs, before they become emergencies.
