Nigeria’s leaders have decided that with recent conflict in Egypt and other countries, the best way to control their society is to open them up to “sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogging websites.” An official said, “We have a lot of problems in this country, from religion to corruption, and the ministry believes it is the right time to tackle many of these issues through the use of social media and get young people talking about issues in Nigeria.” He later said that the use of the technology would be able to show the youth of Nigeria how to be open minded. As I have said before in my previous posts, technology can be a wonderful thing that helps link people all over the world but it can also tear a world apart if not used properly. I think that Nigeria should use technology to help inform the young people but there are also things on the internet that can easily corrupt and guide the youth in the opposite direction that they are attempting to lead them in. The official also said that they want to open Nigeria’s youth up to other people’s ideas and make them more tolerant of each other. Again, while the internet can be a useful tool in making people tolerant of one another, it can also pit one another against each other just as easily. I think that Nigeria should be able to inform their youth on what is going on in the world but they need to be cautious in the ways that they go about doing this.
