NATO is unapologetic

Blog #11

Today NATO refused to apologize for the deadly airstrike it admitted could have mistakenly killed people it has pledged to protect, angering Libyan opposition leaders amid an increasingly frustrating campaign to oust Moammar Gadhafi. What happen was Gadhafi's forces attacked Ajdabiya on Friday with a barrage of artillery fire at the city's western gates. Ajdabiya has flip-flopped a few several times already, is considered almost unwinnable. NATO may have hit rebel tanks near the eastern oil town of al-Brega (Thursday). Opposition members say five people were killed when missiles struck a rebel formation on the eastern Libyan battlefront. This is the second time NATO has been blamed for killing civilians. But the deputy commander of the NATO operation is unapologetic saying it is hard to determine which side is operating the vehicles. NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen called the incident unfortunate. But everyone is angry, saying that the revolutionaries shouldn’t be the ones hit and how is this considered helping? After the aerial attack Thursday morning, Gadhafi's troops pushed back the rebels, retaking territory and moving the front line farther east. Harding said Friday he did not feel NATO needed to strengthen communications with rebels. Part of me understands that yes, causalities are to be expected when we are entering the fighting in a conflict ridden nation. But not saying sorry? That’s just cold. I don’t see why we are over there, but we are and we shouldn’t be shooting the people we are saying we are helping. NATO should have been firm, saying that this kind of situation is not unprecedented, but also lament the dead and wounded. This is the kind of action that turns the people on the fence in foreign lands against us.
