Blog #1- Afghans anxious about exit of foreign troops

As the US troops begin to pull out of Afghanistan, there is a growing unrest among the Afghani people. They feel that their own forces are not yet prepared to take over protection of their nation. Worries that there will be a repeat of the events in 1989 after US troops withdrew and the Taliban rose up in full force, are prevalent. The Taliban has already begun to act out, the president’s step-brother has been assassinated and there have been a number of suicide bombings. The people consider what the amplification of these atrocities will be once American troops are completely withdrawn from their nation. There are mixed feelings on this subject, as with any social issue. US officials believe that the Afghani forces are ready to take over, claiming that the people are not seeing progress that has been made in the last two years of training. On the Afghan side of things, some people have a bright outlook to their future. However, even those who opposed the incoming US troops are now afraid of what will happen when they leave.

One has to wonder if there is a right or wrong solution to this social problem. On the one hand, if the US had not intervened there is no telling if the Taliban would have already completely taken over Afghanistan. However, foreign absence may have allowed the country’s people to organically come to their own conclusion. Now we have to look forward from the decisions that have already been made and acted upon. Will Afghanistan become its own defense or will they succumb to the aggressive Taliban? If the Taliban does take over, there is an increased risk to the rest of the world that they may turn their terrorist activities toward.
