Blog 3: Organized Crime

When you hear the words organized crime, what comes to mind? This article talks about organized crime. Back in the day people thought of organized crime as Italian and Sicilian on the television screen.  Today organized crime includes Russian mobsters, groups from African countries that participate in drug trafficking, Chinese tongs and many other things. These types of organized crime have a presence in the US or targeting our citizens from afar. Organized crime has become so much more relevant because of the use of the internet and other technologies that have become relevant in our world today. The article says that all of these different types of groups are becoming partners in crime. They are realizing that they have more to gain by working together rather than competing.  According to the article the FBI defines organized crime as any group having some manner of formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain money through illegal activities. Organized crime groups maintain their position in the crime world through the use of threatened or actual violence, corrupt public officials, graft, or extortion.

These events have a major impact on people in their local regions and countries. Organized crimes have such of a significant impact on the people in their countries and regions so it causes a social problem. It is a social problem because people have recognized the dangers of these events they have said it publicly. Organized crimes are very dangerous. The scary part of them to me is that these groups plan these violent acts and they are well prepared. Some countries and local communities feel the impact of organized crimes a little bit more than others, but as a whole I think that organized crime affects everyone everywhere.
