Refugees from Tibet were released earlier this week after being held in Nepal after a petition was submitted for their release from authorities. Twenty of the refugees were arrested after crossing the Nepal-Tibet border and the other three were arrested in North-central Nepal . The 23 Tibetan refugees were being held by Chinese authorities who after some time stated that they were going to deport the group, which panicked some individuals because the refugees said that they were likely going to be tortured or killed if they were sent back to Tibet . These refugees were on their way to India where they were going to seek asylum and be placed in schools or monasteries. The group consisted of the majority of the refugees between the ages of 28 and 13. The Tibetan government released the group later after a writ was filed and also because they did not want the negative attention that it would bring on the government both nationally and internationally if they refused to release the group of Tibetans. Thursday Chinese authorities released the group to the UN.
This is another example of individuals seeking asylum encountering serious problems with the government. If no one had spoken out and took legal action to release the refugees they would have likely been deported to Tibet where they would have faced serious consequences for attempting to seek asylum. This again illustrates the numerous issues that surround migration and shows that there is a lot of law reforms and policies that need to change in order to offer anyone that seeks asylum.
