Blog Post #1, Educational Inequality in Chile

Student Education Reform Protests Rock Chile

Summary of Educational Inequality in Chile Article

For 3 months, Chile’s high school and university students have protested the Chilean government demanding free access to quality education for all. Their staged kiss-a-thons, hunger strikes, fake suicides, etc. has turned into the largest protest in about 2 decades. Basically, the students are tired and after 3 failed attempts at compromise, they will not grow tired until their demands have been satisfied. They are not accepting anymore 14 point plans or 21 points proposals, plans that are responsible for the growing disconnect between the rich and the poor. With 76 percent of Chileans approving the demonstrations and protest and the support of roughly 600,000 union workers, government officials will have to do a little more than compromise.

Analysis of Educational Inequality in Chile Article

Educational inequality is a global social problem. It happens all over the world and is the reason why we have educational movements, such as Teach for America in the US. Eliminating educational inequity fits the criteria of a social problem, and the protest, as well as previous compromise exemplifies that the problem is capable of solution through collective action. Quality education for all is essential to eliminate inequality and the article stated, “Education is very segregated, from your birth until you become a professional." So this problem turns into a long term issue, keeping the poor at poverty level, because they are unable to get the good jobs. This happens because only the elite can afford the private schools that provide the best education. Educational inequity contributes to the progress of the world, which is why this uproar in Chile affects us all.
