This article portrays the hardships that women face in the work world not only in America but also women in Azadina, a rural town located in India . These women just like American women are trying to gain independence and establish their place in work field. The working woman has to face many obstacles when entering the work force especially trying to rise up to higher levels. Women who are trying to gain their independence are held back by the stereotype that men can perform certain jobs better than women. With this stereotype most women become comfortable with entry level jobs and those who do rise to higher power don’t support other women who have went through the same stereotypical ways. This too is a very common trait of women in America who gain a higher standing position and don’t help other women accomplish the same success.
Also, many of these working women have to face sexual harassment due to the fact that men believe that they are the dominant leaders in the workforce. There has been several cases reported that involve women being asked to perform sexual favors in order to receive a job promotion. Women who work are also at a higher risk of sexual harassment when they have to travel to work by public transportation. The transportation is overcrowded and men take advantage of the pact capacity touching women in inappropriate ways. This type of behavior can lead to social problems not only concerning women in the workforce but also younger women in those areas growing up looking at these actions that are not acceptable.
Women are seen as the child bearers who have to stay home and take care of the family. When a woman working in India is pregnant and needs to go on maternity leave, she is usually fired and someone else is hired to replace her. These unfair actions contribute to why women are still grasping to the preconceived notions that they can’t better themselves or gain their own independence. In this country when a woman works she is expected to give her paycheck to her father or to her husband the men are considered to be in control of the household. The obstacles and unjust treatment that women in India face is undeniably wrong and there should be laws and regulations that alter these ways.
