Recently the Brazilian police seized the favella Rocinha, its largest slum, and a hub for criminal activity. The government has been cracking down since the 2014 World Cup is going to be held there, as well as a bid for the 2016 olympics. The operation was executed within only a few hours, and without any shots fired by the police, or by gangs within the favella. The government hails this as a great victory against crime within the city of Rio de Janeiro. During the raid of the Favella a local drug kingpin Antonio Francisco Lopes Bonfim was arrested, after he attempted to flee the city. Bonfim is wanted in connection with many different cartels, as well as many different murders within the favella. The residents of the favella have been generally receptive of the increased police presence in the favellas due to the drop in crime. This raid has been only 1 of many in recent months, and has increased public perception of the government, and the police forces.
This is a great example of a government acting on a social problem. Brazil's favellas have always been a hot bed for crime, especially drugs, and a city like Rio de Janiero has been a major port for drug exports. This has been a recent trend in south america, where many different nations have been cracking down on their drug problems. It has also caused many cartels to increase violence in an attempt to stem their governments advance on their territories, but overall violence has been down.

It is good that Brazil is cracking down on the crime, but what worried me was that they are trying to clean up for the 2014 world cup. It makes me feel like would they be less worried had the world cup be taken place somewhere else. I just think that we should be doing whatever possible at all times
This is a great example on how a government should deal with a crisis. the took control of the city and cracked down on the gangs and the violence. It is no wonder that the people are finally doing better, because now they see a government that they can follow behind.
I feel brazil shouldn't be cracking down on crime just because of the world cup. They should be doing it because they want their streets to be safer but it's good that they are doing it and polishing up before the world cup but I feel it shouldn't take eyes on brazil for them to want to clean up their act. It's like cleaning up before you have company only because you have company. It should be done at all times not just that person is there. It took them no time to start getting things under control so why not do it before and eliminate the problem
This is good that Brazil is taking the initiative to protect it's citizens. People will start to cooperate when they see the government and respected officials making an effort.
