Blog #12 Report shows decline in teen births, prematurity, C-sections

The USA has one of the highest premature birth rates in the developed world. However, the rates of teen births, premature deliveries, and c-sections all seem to be dropping. Even though we are still one of the highest in premature birth rates there has been a decline over the past four years. Some of the reduction in premature birth may come from treating high-risk women with hormones that prevent premature delivery. Another reason for the lower rate is that hospitals are doing better with scheduling non-emergency c-sections before the mother is full term. Teen birth rates are at the lowest it’s been in about 70 years. Researchers say this is due to less sex and more methods of contraception than the use of abortion. Doctors are also giving long term birth control methods to teen moms to prevent the birth of a second child at an early age.

Being high in premature births is a problem because this puts more women and children at risk for illnesses and even death since prematurity normally comes when there is a complication. Even though the rates of teen births has dropped it is still a lot higher than it should be but there are things in progress to reduce this even more. The rate of premature births seems to decrease with the decrease in teen pregnancies. This is because teenagers are more likely to go into premature labor. If we continue to work on teen pregnancies and doctors who induce women before they are full term there should be a dramatic decrease in the premature birth rates and an increase in the health of women and children.

It is good to hear that teen pregnancy has decreased. It is obvious that this is correlated with prematurity. Although, the rates are not extremely low that have slightly decreased and that is great. I agree that with more programs teaching younger girls of birth control and other contraceptives this will increase the health of women and maybe children.
