Blog Post #10 A Peaceful Protest for Education

On Monday, students from the Islamic Saudi Academy in Mt. Vernon and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland gathered together at the US Capitol Reflecting Pool to rally and urge the U.S to fund the Education for All Act. This act aims to make global education a development priority and, according to Congresswoman Nita Lowe, it aims to produce a society more resistant to the teachings of terrorist organizations. Along with this peaceful protest, an organization called School Girls United created a visual out of ribbons that spelled out “Education for All”. Something subtle yet meaningful, and it helped to draw attention to the real meaning of their trip. The fact that approximately 70 million children across the world are denied their rights to a basic education is saddening. As a result of them not getting the proper education, they are introduced to the wrong thing, which ultimately gets them involved in conflict. Brain Callahan of the Global Campaign for Education, US Chapter stated that “The world is looking to the US to see if we will continue to sit on the sidelines or will we stand and lead other nations in this smart investment.”

After reading this article, I immediately thought about the students in Chile who are fighting for the same thing, but in a different way. Like I stated 2 blogs ago, they are choosing violence and destruction as a method to get their point across, and it doesn’t seem to be working. Now, we have our very own students within the U.S taking a stand for education, and they didn’t even result to violence. I applaud them! I hope that our congressmen, senate representatives, and our president take note of their rally and really try to do something. The fact that 70 million children aren’t given a basic education just doesn’t make sense to me. This is a social issue because it doesn’t just affect our society, but that of everyone around the world. Congresswoman Lowe made it clear that if a child isn’t given the opportunity of an education, they will result to other things such as violence and crime. Therefore, in order for these issues to cease, our children need to be educated and given the opportunity to be all that they can be, instead of made into child soldiers.

I think this is an act that has the potential to make sure all of our future generations get the education they need to potentially run our country some day. This will be a extreme measure in getting all of the kids out there the necessary education that they lack.

Its refreshing to see that young people can have a peaceful pretest instead of jumping to violence. So many times when people get angry with something, they fly off the handlebars and act like animals. Nobody will take a person seriously when they act so foolish. I think this method has potential to be very successful.
