Blog 2: Cutting Jobs? Sure, Why Not?

When a business doesn't do as well as expected after yearly numbers are totaled, decisions must be made to make up for the losses obtained. Some companies tend to lower the cost of the products in hopes to sell more and make more profit. Some businesses may delete an entire product line from its inventory to save money for the next fiscal year. If you interview some of the top executives from sucessful businneses, they probably won't hesisate to tell you that the quickest way to eliminate costs is to simply layoff workers.

Alcatel-Lucent, a top telephone equipment maker in France, have announced they will layoff about 3.4 percent of the their workforce in order to cut costs for their company. The majority of the article had the spokesperson, Simon Poutler, summarizing the decision to eliminate the employees by simply stating "to reduce costs and increase profitability". As a executive, he may see this as a good business decision, but what about the people who are actually on the verge of being unemployed not based on any wrong doings?

Job loss is still a gigantic social issue that happens everyday throughout the world. The spokesperson for Alcatel-Lucent's tone in the article was apathetic for the potential employees who would lose their jobs. No mention on what the company would do for those employes or even the welfare for them was found in the article. I believe he (the spokesperson) chose to avoid the issue as a whole to prevent altercation or conflict.
