Blog 2: London's unemployed strive to get Olympic jobs

The 2012 summer Olympics are being held in London, England and are fast approaching. With a huge event that the whole world will be watching you have to make sure everything is going to go as smoothly as possible. People will be coming from all over the world to watch the games and they will be bringing their money which will be poured into the London economy. Along with the games comes opportunities for temporary employment for citizens.  Although it's only temporary, any work can help a family put food on the table. The article starts off talking about how unemployed citizens of London heard about job openings to staff the olympics and they wanted to apply for the jobs. Their are 10,000 openings for the position of security guards that will help the British military and police forces keep the games safe. Over 30,000 people have applied for the 10,000 positions so it will be very competitive.
The cost of the olympic games is budgeted at 9.3 billion pounds. There is only 0.4% budgeted for costs that arise during the games. It is important for them to stay in budget because if they can't they will have to go to the taxpayers to ask for the money to cover costs. They are already taxed a lot and will not be happy about it. The construction workers are finishing up the stadium and things are coming together and they are starting to plan the event, hence the reason for hiring security guards. It went on to talking about the subway train system in London known as the Jubilee Line. They made some changes and added more trains to deal with the influx of people expected to come to the city. The director said they expect to have an extra 500,000 people per day during the olympics and they have to have transportation. This transportation will pour money into the local economy because you have to pay to ride them. There will be a need for more people working all throughout the city which will be good for the unemployed.

This is significant because it will help out the London economy and probably the whole economy of England by people from all over the world coming to watch the games. They have to pay for hotels, to eat, for transportation and will probably take in the sites and everything so it will bring a lot of money into the economy. Also the games are bringing jobs which is good for the economy. It is putting people back to work temporarily which is always a good thing. It will only strengthen the economy there which will help out world markets.
