Blog 2: New Law to Help Sex Trafficking Victims Rebuild their Lives

The global current event dealing with crime that is very significant is an article discussing a new law that will help sex trafficking victims. The article is titled, “New Law to Help Sex Trafficking Victims Rebuild their Lives,” written by The Sun-Times Media Wire. This article is current because Senate Bill 1037 became effective at the beginning of this month. In the article it describes Senate Bill 1037 as allowing defendants who are victims of human trafficking at the time of their prostitution convictions to file a motion to vacate the conviction if the defendant’s participation in the offense was the result of being a victim. In the article it stresses how this Bill will give these victims a second chance. Without this Bill in place, these victims could be limited in their ability to achieve housing, employment, education, and even parental rights. Senator Hutchinson states: “The most important thing about Senate Bill 1037 is that it makes sure that the judicial system has a mechanism to ensure that a person who has been the victim of a crime is not automatically considered a criminal.” This Bill is very important and has an impact on the rest of the world.
I believe that this current event on crime has a significance for the whole world, not just the United States. The reason that this Senate Bill is so significant to other countries is because human trafficking takes place all around the world, which leaves victims of this horrid crime all around the world, and there is a great need of help for all of these victims. As other countries see that there are ways in which they can protect, help, and give victims another chance at life, it is likely that more and more countries are going to adapt similar Bills or laws such as Senate Bill 1037. This will in turn help eliminate the social problem of human trafficking. Countries all around the world know how major the crime of human trafficking really is. Most countries already are aware of this crime and have organizations that make the severity of this crime aware to the citizens. This current global event on crime is very significant and will impact the rest of the world.
