Blog 5 :Peripheral Artery Disease Undertreated,Understudied in Women

Peripheral artery disease can lead to heart attack or stroke and it is still unknown and untreated in women. American Heart Association Scientific gave an idea about starting a American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women awareness knowledge about PAD. According to Globe Newswire stated that women with PAD are two or three times more likely to have a stroke than those without it. PAD is a serious circulatory disease caused by a buildup of fat and other content in blood vessels outside of the heart, usually in the legs, feet and arms. It can increase heart attack and stroke risk and also cause tissue death. About 8 million people in the US have peripheral artery disease. Dr. Alan.T Hirsch, lead author and professor of University of Minnesota Med School, stated that the rate of deaths and the healthcare costs associated with PAD are almost near to those of heart disease and stroke.  The Go Red for Women, helps women to be aware of the risks, encourage them to talk openly and honestly with their healthcare provider about those risks and teaching them about the prevention and treatment options that can help them save their lives. Treatments like diet and lifestyle changes, medication and supervised exercise can help it lessen PAD.
It is a wonderful idea to start a campaign Go Red for Women which will lessen PAD in women globally. People must take seriously their responsibility to include women as a key target audience to prevent, diagnose and treat PAD. If this won’t stop then PAD would be a huge social problem. The idea to fund an research is required to determine how gender may affect the rate of development of PAD, the response of medication is all included in Go Red for Women’s campaign. We all really need to look forward to support this campaign since a lot of Women are totally oblivious about PAD.
