Dubai police were able to break down the Ficino drug-trafficking and money laundering network. This was known as one of the world’s largest international drug stings. There was a key component to making the sting investigation successful. The cooperation of international people, that helped fight against the drug world was very important. The anti-narcotics force was the key to this operation. The force had been secretively investigating the Ficino network since 2009 and finally had a breakthrough when they arrested two people and found 140 kilograms of Cocaine in Peru. The drug bust was an international operation. Germany and Argentina sent heavy machinery to Dubai, but the machines were being loaded with drugs in South America and being distributed around the world. Dutch police were able to conduct raids and arrested some people, while in Spain and Dubai police were able to arrest more suspects involved. The United States, China, the UK, Malaysia and France came together to collectively attempt to put an end to the drug trade. Out of all 26 smuggling attempts the police were able to stop 16 attempts in Asia, nine in Africa, and one in Australia. The police intend to do whatever it takes to put an end to this according to Gen Al Mahdi, who is at the head of the narcotic force.
In my opinion I do think that police cracking down on this issue is important. As I have talked about in my past blogs drug trafficking is very dangerous and not an issue that should be taken lightly. I do feel police are not trying hard enough to crack down on the issue. In another class of mine we discussed that a lot of police are either corrupt and are involved in the drug trade or they do not speak up out of fear for their families. From reading this article it is clear that catching suspects is not an easy task knowing the amount of time it has taken for the police to crack this case. That being said, the police only caught a handful of people, meaning that there are plenty more out there to be arrested. For the sake of society I hope the agreement and cooperation of the different countries can bring the drug trade to a halt.
