“The United States invests more in K-12 public education than many other developed countries, yet United States students remain poorly prepared to compete with global peers.” Another issue is that “almost forty percent of minority students fail to graduate.” With the education system declining it put the United States in jeopardy to compete with other countries who are “high skilled in the global marketplace. Twenty-two of higher school students are college ready but minorities are even lower in number. With only forty- three high school students meeting the standard to enter into college, the majority of students need remedial classes to be able to do college work. Another area that the United States fails to educate is in foreign languages. “Eight out of ten Americans only speak English. The lack of foreign languages is causing the Unites States State Department is experiencing a lack of trained linguist.”
So how is this a global issue? “According to the Council’s Report, the lack of educational preparedness causes a threat to five security fronts:
· Economic Growth and Competitiveness
· Physical Safety
· Intellectual Property
· US Global Awareness
· US Unity and Cohesion
I believe that the United States need to invest in human capital and make education their main concern. The quote from the article says “large, undereducated swaths of the population damage the ability of the United States to physically defend itself, protect its secure information, conduct diplomacy, and grow its economy.” If the US fails to educate its youth, it will lead to the doom of this country. Education is so vital to the survival of the US and if we fail to compete or educate our future than we are no different than undeveloped countries. The reason why is because soon our resources will be depleted and all the people who are running the world now will die off leaving the next generation in a mess because we did not teach them what they need to do to run this country or survive.
