Blog 7: British law to limit Years Migrants can work in the UK

Do to influx of migrant workers in England, the British government is looking to enact a law that would limit the amount of time a migrant worker can stay in the UK to no more than five years. This is being done in order to create a stronger “guest worker” labor force. This new law would apply to all migrants except those who make £35,000 a year. It is estimated that this law will affect over 40,000 skilled migrant workers in the UK. The hope is that this new plan to limit the number of years a skilled migrant worker can stay in the UK will cut the current net migration of about 250,000 down to “tens of thousands” by the next general election. The British government believes that setting the required income to remain in the country at £35,000 a year will ensure that only the best and brightest get to stay.
There is much to say about this proposed law. It only caters to the upper class. This class favoritism is exactly the kind of thing that discourages workers from choosing to work in that country to begin with. The government is essentially saying, the wealthy get to stay, but the ones who don’t meet the financial requirement cannot live here indefinitely. Many of these migrants are targeted because they are employed through intra-company programs that is exempt from the limit of migrant workers already established in that country. These companies mostly bring in non-European workers through this program. So now this new law is targeting workers that are non-European, a sort of subtle way of “cleansing” the British population of drastically different ethnicities before they have the opportunity to settle.
