Blog 8: UN 3 Pakistani Policemen in Haiti Guilty of Sexual Abuse

Three Pakistani policemen in Haiti were found guilty of sexual abuse and exploitation. According to United Nations officials the men were a part of a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. Spokesman Martin Nesirky said that Pakistani judges who traveled to Haiti requested a court-martial on the men. Most likely the three men will be dishonorably discharged and have to serve a jail sentence. So far two of them were sentenced to a year in jail for sexually abusing a 14 year old Haitian boy. It was relevant that Pakistani officials notified the UN and Haitian authorities so that they were made aware of the trial information.

I am happy that these police officers were caught red handed and will be held accountable for their actions. Although this article is short it hits home for me. Being of Haitian decent, I have cousins that were and are possibly currently being abused by police and blackmailed by other officials over in Haiti. When my cousins and I do get the opportunity to talk a few times a year they tell me how lucky I am to have been born here in America and not have to deal with the daily struggles they face. Sexual abuse by police happens all around the world though. Those Pakistani police raped a Haitian boy but police molest, blackmail, rape, and abuse people all of the time. The fact that the UN is involved says a lot. This is a world issue and these cases need to be watched more closely in my opinion.
