Blog #12: North Korea Prison Camps: 150,000 Languish In Secret Gulags, Human Rights Group Says

North Korea has been popular in the news with their latest missile tests and gaining criticism for not dismantling their nuclear program. Because of all this uproar about the missile testing there has been little talk about a inhumane prison camp detaining 150,000 Languish people. The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea has issued a report that states there has been the incarceration and detention of families, including children and grandparents, for the political crimes of their family members. It also reports that many of the detainees are being held for senseless crimes liking joking about the Korean government or having different opinions than the government. Robert King, the US envoy for North Korean Human rights compares the camps to the Soviet Union gulag but claims that conditions are far worse.

This treatment of citizens is a classic example of a dictator style government. What is interesting is North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This is interesting that North Korea outwardly tries to exemplify a democratic style government that is for the people but internally is harshly ruling over its people with a dictatorially style government. North Korea has an interesting government in that you can't call it a dictatorship or a democracy. It is obviously not a democracy as seen by the injustice within its boards but also not a dictatorship because it has a form of government that on paper resembles a democratic government. We are confronted with the question of what classifies a government as democratic or autocratic?

This is ridiculous. North Korea needs to be stopped by someone. You made a great point and it is something that I recently began thinking about. North Korea says that they have a democratic government but in actuality is is a dictatorship. They are told what to do and how to do it. It is like they are brainwashed. The question of what type of government they actually have is the question of the hour. They are some scary people. All countries that they are against need to watch their backs.
