The Trayvon Martin case has been making headlines since he was murdered on February 26. Believe it or not the case is getting even more heated as armed neo-Nazis are reportedly patrolling the streets of Sanford, Florida. A group of roughly 10 to 20 volunteers are settling into the area where the black, unarmed teen was shot and killed. Proclaiming, that they don’t have intentions of starting any trouble, and that they only want to protect the “white citizens in the area” in the event of race riots. The neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, has caused massive protests across the country and rising tensions over race and justice. In response to the shooting, the New Black Panther Party had a bounty put on Zimmerman of 10,000 dollars.
When the story first came out to the media, I knew that race was automatically found its way into the story. Then finding out the details of this violent crime I asked not only myself, but anyone curious, “what if the situation was switched around? Would this story have been so publicized?” The questions that arose were only trying to clarify how the media sees race. A Gallup poll was taken with the same intention; most black Americans- 73% think that Zimmerman would have been arrested if Martin had been white, while just 33% of non-Hispanic white people said the same thing. The neo-Nazi party, in my opinion, is doing nothing wrong, and is only trying to counter the bounty that had been put up earlier. The fact that they are armed may be irrational, but from history standing people start to riot whenever they feel that their race is being treated unjust. The story will continue to get bigger until government has to interfere or riots will slowly start
