Blog 8: India's public school students at par with private students

October 12, 2012

In America, when parents are beginning to put their children in school most contemplate whether they are going to send their children to public or private school. The same case in other countries is true. This article is about how in India there is a debate about whether there is a difference in education between public school and private school. According to a study by a Michigan State researcher “private school students in India do not outperform their counterparts in public schools.” Amita Chudgar, assistant professor of educational administration analyzed the reading, writing, and math performance of Indian students. Their study of the two types of schools shows that there is no benefit of attending private school. The article talked about how Chudgar used in her study, students in public and private schools who have the same background because most students that are in private school come from families that have higher incomes than those in public school. They also found that private school attendance is not associated with any systematic and specific benefit in terms of increased student achievement. Most of the studies that have been done on public versus private school in India, although very few studies have been done, have shown to favor private schools. I think that it is best to just research the two different types of schools and for the family to decide what type of school is best for their child, them, and their family.
