This week I am writing about crime in prison. I chose this topic because in class we were talking about prisons and I just find it very interesting all the things we do not know that are going on in prisons, especially globally. China intrigued me when talking about what they are aloud to do in prisons and how they cant talk to anyone in their families and it seems as even if they didn’t commit the crime they are usually still killed because China uses their prisoners organs and sells them. This week I read an article called “Prison deaths rising as cutbacks take effect’’. The article states that, “Resource cutbacks are putting an increasing strain on the prison system in England and Wales, with a growing current of deaths, attempted suicides and assaults, according to the chief inspector of prisons”. “Nick Hardwick, in his annual report, says there has been a general improvement in jail conditions, with many prisons responding positively to the government's "rehabilitation revolution", but progress has been uneven and is now under threat”. In prisons the abuse of drugs is growing based on the fact that the prisons have had to cut back on funding therefore, they have less security. This is making it so resources are having to cover more ground and it is harder to keep the prisoners safe and secure. In the last year “deaths in prison have risen from 54 in 2010-11 to 66 in 2011-12. They also show that incidents of self-harm also rose in men's prisons from 14,768 in 2010-11 to 16,146 this year, and the number of recorded assaults rose from 13,804 to 14,858 over the same period”. It is just very interesting to see how the prisoners react to having less “supervision”. It really does worry me because if we need to cutback I don’t think it should be on security especially with all that is happening because of these cut backs.
