Blog #1: Global Economic Recession Causing More Poverty, Deaths For Females Than Males: Report

The article, “Global Economic Recession Causing More Poverty, Deaths For Females Than Males: Report” is mainly about young women and girls in developing countries who are suffering and struggling more than the males economically, educationally, and health wise. Young women and girls in certain developing countries are being forced to drop out of school and expected to work in the home because of the stereotype of what women are “supposed” to do. The women who live in countries like Nicaragua and Cambodia, have stopped eating as much to make sure that the men and children have enough to eat first. Also, the rate of jobs amongst women in developing countries has decreased and their unpaid work in the home has increased. Women in these countries who are experiencing any form of inequality is feeling powerless and seemingly hopeless for things to change and getting  “used to” how things have become. No human being should have to get “used to” treatment and inequality on this level; starving oneself, dropping out of school, and working in the home 24/7. Nigel Chapman is the Chief Executive Officer who studies and analyzes issues concerning these women. He draws attention to the fact that inequality is increasing more and more and less attention is being paid to it. Young girls are even more susceptible to maltreatment for their age. In certain areas they are being used as sex slaves and forced to work in places where they are more prone to abuse and harm.

I thought this article was extremely relevant to things that are circulating in our society presently. How poverty plays such an important role, globally and locally, and has such strong effects on people all around the world. More and more women and children are suffering as the outcome of poverty in certain developing countries. Chapman brought attention that education could be the gateway for children to get out of the horrible flow they are in now. Obama is also trying to help improve conditions for these women and girls across the globe by renewing the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. It wouldn’t completely solve the issue of what is happening, but it would help roughly 27 million people. I think that Nigel Chapman bringing this to attention helps put it into perspective for the people who do not witness it. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be a saying that really fits this type of situation. Hopefully the renewal of this act will help protect and save millions.
