Pollution is my topic that I wish to discuss with you today
and within this article stating the ways that the country of Nigeria is suing
the Shells parent corp. for continuing to pollute their villages for the last
for decades. A Nigerian tribal king filed a lawsuit in a US court seeking $1
billion from Royal Dutch Shell to compensate for decades of pollution that
sickened his people and damaged their lands, as his lawyer had stated.
The suit was filed a day after the US Supreme Court said it will consider a lawsuit accusing Shell of human rights abuses in Nigeria in a landmark case that could make companies liable for torture or genocide committed overseas.

The complaint also noted that Shell has "not taken any
concrete steps to protect the environment, provide safe drinking water or
subject the endangered people of Nsisioken Ogale Community to medical
assessment and treatment" since then. In addition to the $1 billion
damages, the lawsuit also seeks immediate cleanup of the pollution and an
injunction to require air and water monitoring.
This lawsuit has
continued on for the last two years and both sides of this case are using the “devils
advocate in order to try to pin blame on the other. The number of registered oil spillages is
increasing…Depending on the area, oil pollution could cause adverse impact on
people (water quality), vegetation (smothering mangrove trees, crops, shore
vegetation and fauna (fish, shellfish, and soil fauna). This is demonstrated in
several post impact studies on the recent or old spill sites. If this keeps up,
we could have to erase Nigeria of the map.
