India goes Backwards on Human Rights

India has been under the microscope lately regarding human rights issue because of the recent event that occurred on December 28, 2012 involving the death and rape of a 23 year old woman.  It was reported that the 23 year old young lady was raped by several men on a moving bus. This incident caused a major protest in New Delhi which caused a riot between government officials and protesters. The treatment of women in India has been an issue that has always been criticized and now the new generations of India is demanding some type of action towards this issue.
In this recent article it says that “the protection of human rights in India took a turn for the worse in 2012”. Because of the issues that have arise recently the government have been under major scrutiny in the sense that they are not doing enough to protect women in India. The director of Human Rights Watch, Meenakshi Ganguly said, “At the Prime Minister’s level and the cabinet level there might be much desire for change, but the police officer on the ground who is supposed to register a case of rape is the face of the state.” A report also said that the lack of protection for freedom of speech and the misapplication of a colonial-era sedition law continues to undermine the development of civil society and the space for dispute in India.
The issue regarding the treatment of women in India has always been an issue for many years. With the society becoming more exposed and educated about modern societies it becomes a more focused issue for a course of action to take place. Laws issued by government can definitely be difficult to implement if you do not have a collision of corporation amongst all levels of this process. I think that this issue will continue over the next couple years and I think will be an interesting issue to follow because I think there is the possibility for a change to occur.
