Blog 5: Human Trafficking in Chile

Human trafficking is such a big issue right now and many countries are involved. One of them being Chile although they do not consider themselves to be apart of this. Some countries are considered transit routes and some are considered starting points and/or destinations but Chile is considered to be all three. They believe Chile is the perfect place for human trafficking because of the social, economic and political situations going on therefore making it easy for people to be trafficked. Also it is an attractive country making many young women leaving their homes for “jobs” in Chile. However, they do not see it as human trafficking and do not understand that severity of it. They do not believe they are doing anything wrong when exploiting girls and women for labor.

This is a huge issue because I’m sure Chile is not the only country who does not think they are contributing to Human Trafficking. Many countries are exploiting girls for labor and disguising it as new jobs or opportunities however do not realize that what they are doing is illegal. There needs to be awareness on the issue, especially to people across the world and neighboring countries to know that this is going on. People need to be able to understand the complexity of Human Trafficking and recognize it before it becomes too late. Also, countries need to understand it so that they realize they are participating in slavery and need to stop. It is such a huge issue with many lives taken away from girls and women and although we have a long way until it gets resolved, they can start with one country at a time.
