Blog 10: Rio de Janeiro state legalizes gay marriage

On April 19th, 2013 Rio de Janeiro became the 11th state, out of 27 states, of Brazil to legalize gay marriage and marriage equality.  This ruling allows homosexual couples to have the same rights as heterosexual couples in a binding marriage. Although the Supreme Federal Court voted unanimously in favor of marriage equality back in May 2011, the judge of Rio de Janeiro was opposed, and gay marriage was not passed. This time, the General Magistrate of Justice passed the ruling to allow marriage equality in the state.
It was a long road for the LBGT community to finally gain this right, and required a number of petitions and requests to make this subject an important matter. However, it is great to see the progress that has come from it. Although there will always be those who disagree, it is also great to see that such a large number of people are in favor of marriage equality in this state.
Hopefully there will soon be a tipping point in which the rest of the states will follow this movement. Hopefully there will also be a tipping point around the world as more and more areas become overwhelmingly in favor of gay marriage, and the equal rights it will bring for them.
