Blog 10: South African police accused of routinely torturing crime suspects

This story comes from the same police officials that I blogged about a few weeks ago, who attached a man to the back of the police van and dragged him. Another torture victim has come forward, Taxi driver William Dube. He was tortured by police officials in 2010 following armed robbery charges. Two weeks after he was charged, he was taken to a tourist building where he was tortured by suffocation games, kicking and beating him, humiliating him in front of a woman officer, and even set up wires to his genitalia to shock him. This wasn't all, he was also hung over the edge of the building by his feet until we told the police he would cooperate with their story. His co-accused friend in the armed robbery also shared the same fate. The article goes onto share more stories of torture victims and how their medical records and police statements about the torture had disappeared.

This article is very one sided, and when asking police officials what was happening, Police spokesman Brigadier Billy Jones said he was aware of the allegations, which were being investigated. "This office can only confirm that the mentioned accused, who are making these allegations, are currently facing serious charges, namely two of armed robbery and one of burglary at business premises." Since this is now the second incident that is being publicized, hopefully that will put some emphasis to bring order to the police system and to stop police brutality.
