There was an event hosted by MIPTV
in Cannes, France. The Global Education First Initiative also known as GEFI
took center stage at this event. The United Nations chose to have MIPTV’s
anniversary highlight The Global Education First Initiative. They believed that
by doing that it would utilize the power of television and its industry to
raise the profile of education and more importantly global education. There was
an interview with MIPTV’s Gordon Brown who stated that the launch of The Global
Education First Initiative has done a lot in the recent years to move education
up the global agenda. This past week there was a high profile panel that
discussed a video message from the UN Secretary. There were guest speakers
there such as Ziauddin Yousafzai who is the father of the school girl from Pakistan.
This particular Pakistan girl was shot by the Taliban for attending school.
This event was held and aimed to communicate the global education priorities to
a broader audience. They also wanted to show how television and the
entertainment industry can have positive social change and create a bigger
support for global education. They also created a countdown to the year 2015
which is the target year for the Millennium Developmental Goals. There will be
both online and offline events that are planned to continue the advocacy for
the efforts on education and other issues. The United Nations is joining forces
with the European Union to create a partnership that will promote citizenship,
peace and human rights around the world. As I continuously read articles that are being
posted around the world, I see that education and more specifically global
education is a pressing issue and seems to be a big priority around the world.
Global education is something that will help this world in so many ways and it
is something that continues to rise on the world’s issues and priorities list.
