Blog 9: Egyptian Protester Dies after Suspected Police Torture

An Egyptian protestor, Mohamed el-Guindy died after allegedly being beaten and strangled by the police four days. Egyptian hospital records says el-Guindy died on Monday, February 4th, as a result of injuries from a car accident. Activists who saw the 28-year-old arrested following protests in Tahir Square on January 27th say officers took him to a police camp where they strangled him with a cord and allegedly beat him until his ribs and jaw both cracked before taking him to the hospital to die. A human rights lawyer investing el-Guindy’s death said, “You couldn’t recognize his face from a photograph, it was so swollen.”

The article goes on to explain the conditions of Cairo, and informing readers that the president, the first democratically elected in June has little respect for human rights as the dictatorship it replaced. The article goes on to give examples of this, and how nothing has been done to prosecute any officers for the deaths of around 800 protestors during an uprising. This article however, does not say why Mohamed el-Guindy was arrested and how else people know that he was in fact taken to a police camp. It leaves out key information leaving readers to draw conclusions for themselves.
