Blog#6 New Scientist Discovery

Skull Fossil Suggests Simplier Human Lineage

Technology has enabled society to do things that have not ever been done before as well as simplifying human life. 8 years ago the first perfectly preserved humanoid skull was found and led to a startling discovery. After studying a 1.8 billion year old human skull for 8 years scientist have discovered that instead of having different species of ‘homo’ there may have existed only one species with different linages. The bones that they thought were of a different species really was the result of evolution. Through technological advances the skull was compared to 5 other early homo skulls who all lived in the same area around the same time.

The beginning of human life has held a lot of controversy surrounding where we came from and how we are different from one another. This article further proves the fact that we as humans no matter what color our skin, what ethnicity we belong to or what religion we partake in have way more similarities than differences. In class we talked about there being no significant differences between the human population and this article states that even 1.8 billion years ago the homo species was just ever evolving and was not different types of “homo”. It is important in sociology because it can further help the society understand the insignificance of difference between us all.
